MUSIC // Ruben Hazelzet is a Dutch composer, DJ & pianist from a musical family. He began playing piano at age seven, and soon dived deep into the works of Rachmaninoff, Beethoven, and Chopin. Over time, he developed his own style, drawing influence from modern composers like Ludovico Einaudi, Nils Frahm, and Ólafur Arnalds.
His move to South Africa marked a turning point, as he embraced the country’s vast landscapes and diverse creative energy. Performing in unique settings—from the peak of Table Mountain to the stillness of the Karoo Desert—shaped his signature sound: a fusion of neo-classical and minimalistic elements.
Having grown up in the Netherlands surrounded by World Music - and a father who ventured out on many travels to Latin America and Africa - it’s no surprise that Ruben followed his footsteps. South Africa has opened up a whole new world of music and his love of old AfroBeats, AfroPunk, Salsa & Samba have only grown stronger. Ruben’s DJ sets are energetic dance affairs full of pumping beats to which it is physically impossible not to move your body.
Ruben has captivated audiences at festivals such as AfrikaBurn, Pangea, and Thrive Festival. Whether on stage or in the studio, his music invites deep reflection, offering listeners a moment of peace.
